Abstract
Early detection and management of keratoconus are critical to maintaining quality of life. Glasses and contact lenses may be utilized to aid function early in the course of the disease. However, contact lenses do not slow or stop the advancement of keratoconus. Glasses may be used for correction in mild cases of keratoconus, or in addition to contact lenses to wear at home. Vision may be limited since glasses do not correct irregular astigmatism. Soft contact lenses are an option in early cases. In moderate to advanced cases, rigid corneal gas permeable, piggyback, hybrid, and scleral contact lenses improve vision by correcting irregular astigmatism induced by an irregular cornea. In this chapter, we will review the use of various types of spectacles and contact lenses in the optical management of keratoconus.
